Giltrap Engineering Ltd has entered the fertiliser spreader market with a range of precision spreaders offering variable hydraulic drive and computerised controls as standard features.

Well known in New Zealand and Australia for forage wagons, bale feeders, tip trailers and slurry spreaders, Giltrap's line-up of 2.5 to 10 tonne precision spreaders offers high-tech accuracy in applying various fertilisers.

The Giltrap Spreader is based on a robust design originally developed by Spreaders NZ Ltd, a subsidiary of Bucktons Engineering, from whom Giltrap has secured manufacturing and marketing rights.

"We saw that Eric and Maurice (Buckton) had put a lot of knowledge and their practical experience of more than 20 years into developing a reliable and accurate spreader with a wide conveyor belt to minimise bridging (clumping) in the bin," said Craig Mulgrew, Managing Director of Giltrap Engineering Ltd.

"They were well advanced with computerised precision spreading and we are totally on board with this concept, which is why it's a standard feature on Giltrap spreaders," said Craig.

The advantages are both economic and environmental.

"Farmers want more control in managing their costs and resources and the Giltrap Spreader offers the technology to economise on fertiliser use, more accurately apply soil analysis recommendations and to confidently operate within regional council requirements."

As well as the latest spreader advances, Giltrap offers the support of 40 dealerships nation-wide and phone support at 0800 804 458.

The Giltrap Spreader's computer interface is an in-cab DICKEY-john "Land Manager" console with a large format LCD display, arrow buttons for increasing or decreasing quantities, two buttons for factory settings and a third button for the in-field input of spread width, product density and application rate.

It includes a log display for checking how many hectares have been covered and the quantity of fertiliser distributed.

The rate of application by all Giltrap Spreaders is "infinitely variable" from less than 40 kg/ha, as commonly required for trace elements, to 10 tonne/ha for products such as lime or chicken manure.

Standard is an 850 mm-wide rubber conveyor belt on heavy rollers and a stainless steel bin with spinners counter-rotating at up to 1000 rpm to give a proven double-overlap spread pattern out to 24 metres. The bin is bolted to an independent steel chassis to minimise stress and enable easy removal for access to the belt assembly and other parts. The bolt-on axle assembly is also designed for simple removal and servicing.

"This is a wider unit with a lower centre of gravity for safer handling on slopes and it's set up to handle most products suitable for spreading," said Craig, who sees promise in recent experiments by dairy farmers wanting to spread dried effluent from feed-pads.

The Giltrap Spreader, with its ground speed measured electronically to enable accurate spreading rate adjustments, offers significant benefits over the traditional spreader using wheel-driven belts and chains adjusted by changing sprockets and gate heights.
